2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 39

Day 39, Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Cheaha State Park, Delta, AL, Day 3 - 0 Miles,1,964.6 Miles for the Trip

Cooler than last night at 44°F. It was a clear night so I went out to check out the stars. Lots of trees, but the real problem was far too many lights at the various sites. I might have done better waiting until midnight, but didn't.

Around 8:00AM I heard dumpsters being dumped. Don't know why it was wasn't at the usual 6:00AM, but during my morning walk I found them (they are not on the campground map) and saw a house boat camper:

The House Boat Camper

The campground has thinned out a bit; now about half full. I discovered that at the dumpsters I can get text messages. Didn't try to send any & no emails downloaded. I also didn't try any web pages. I'll wait on those until this afternoon when I head to town.

I'm at Walmart uploading the last two day's pages. I also managed to cancel the Hungry Mother reservations.I know I should get rid of some or even most of the junk email I get, but it is usually so easy to dump it when I do my daily morning reading that I don't bother. Times like this is when it gets me.

I also managed to cancel the Hungry Mother reservations, pay for my next 6 months of XM Radio for both the truck & trailer, and download an audio book - Michael Connelly's Resurrection Walk. I did find stuffing (the last box of plain stove top stuffing) and, unfortunately, jar turkey gravy (I prefer the power that you mis with water - actually, I prefer to make it from scratch but with just a turkey breast, that isn't going to happen). So, I should be set for tomorrow.

I did an on line search for StarLink Minis, but no one near by had one in stock. The earliest I could get one was December 3rd, by which time I'll be long gone. I also know that the day I buy one I'll never be without a cell modem connection.

On the way back I stopped at one of the overlooks (there are 2 - this photo is the 1st one heading towards the park). I made a panorama:

I do have a larger version (3.1Mb)

After processing the panorama, I read until dinner time.

Since I had a large lunch, dinner was just some chocolate milk, crackers & an ice cream cone for dessert. Doesn't that sound like a healthy dinner?

2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 38

Day 38, Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Cheaha State Park, Delta, AL, Day 2 - 0 Miles,1,964.6 Miles for the Trip

Well, it didn't freeze overnight; down to 54°F. It is very foggy, thick enough that I can't see the bathroom building only 50' away. I thought about skipping my morning walk, but my rules are to only skip it if it is raining. So, off I went. By the time I hit a quarter of a mile my glasses were fogged up & my photo vest was soaking wet. While it wasn't raining, it sure was wet. I didn't see any other fools out walking, although one of the folks in a Glamping tent was outside cooking breakfast. I did see a Bowlus, a lightweight aluminum trailer that looks like it is attached backwards to the tow vehicle. The door is in the tow vehicle end rather than on the side, and while it looks a bit like an Airstream, it cost 4 times as much (starts at $173,000.00). Sure hope it isn't like this when I leave on Sunday. Driving in fog this dense would be slow going.

When I got back to the trailer I broke another one of my rules - cooking bacon in the trailer. I decided not to set up the outdoor stove in the fog, and for some reason, wanted bacon & eggs for breakfast, so I fired up the stove hood & cooked inside. At least I didn't set off the smoke alarm even though I burned the toast.

Three days without an internet connection was OK, but I'm not looking forward to 5 more. When I connected yesterday at Camping World, I saw an announcement from Walter (the one who runs the Hungry Mother Rally) that reservations were open for the 2025 rally, and were going fast. Since I made them last time for both the Guidos & myself, I got on the Virginia reservation system and discovered that there was only one pair of sites left that were next to each other. The sites we had this October were already gone. So, I made reservations for us. Then, scrolling through my 185 emails, near the bottom I found one forwarded from Anne that was a reservation for next year for the same site I had this year. I called, and sure enough, they made reservations. I tried to cancel mine, but was told I have to wait 48 hours because the reservation is "in process".

So, another trip into internet land will be necessary. I forgot stuffing for my turkey dinner on Thursday, so I will probably go in on Wednesday to cancel the reservations & to a grocery store for stuffing.

Another observation - last summer I replaced my 4 trailer drawers with tongue & groove frames and designed what in my mind was an innovative drawer lock. In the past I have had drawers come out on rough or curvy roads. In one case I found the drawer in pieces on the floor & the silverware scattered around the trailer. With the new drawers I used soft closure slides to replace the cheap ones Escape was using in 2017 (I believe that are using a better drawer system now, although there have been lots of complaints on the forum about the screws holding the slide to the frame backing out & jamming the drawer). In any case, if you want to see the drawer lock & new slides, check out my 21 Trailer Modifications page.

What I have discovered is that with the new soft close drawer slides I don't need the locks. I have left them in the unlocked position for this entire trip & never found an open drawer. I've certainly hit some curvy roads. Still useful if you have the older slides, but I don't need them. I took a photo of the handle package for those interested. For those that want to replace the slides, they are 16" soft close slides from Lowes. You need to scroll down on the trailer modification page to see these changes. Right now it is at the bottom of the page, but depending on how many new modifications I make, you may need to search for it.

Since I didn't take a site photo yesterday, I took one around 11:00 today. The fog has cleared quite a bit, but hasn't gone away:

A Foggy Site 17 Photo

It is getting cooler as the day goes on. It was 54°F this morning; now at 11:12 it is down to 49°F. I don't think waiting for it to warm up before heading to the showers is going to work.

There are 4 showers, individual rooms at the end of the building. One is handicapped. They are barely heated by a mini split AC (although it might be barely working because of the 49°F outside temperature). Still, much warmer than the outside temperature. A single unit temperature control / low volume/fine spray showerhead. There is a small wall between the shower and the drying area which has a fold down seat/bench & 2 hooks. Because the showerhead aims at the wall between the shower & drying area, and because the wall is narrow, the entire drying area floor gets wet. The water only gets to lukewarm turned all the way up. Overall, a C-. By the way, the campground included a note that the area is currently under drought conditions, dry enough that the springs that usually supply the campground water have dried up enough that they are trucking in water.

Around 1:30 the sun came out, burned off the rest of the fog, and jumped the temperature to 50°F. There are folks wandering around in shorts, but I'm glad to be wearing my flannel lined cargo pants. The camping area is about 3/4 full.

Because of a larger than usual breakfast & lunch, all I had for dinner was a bowl of cereal & a banana.

2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 37

Day 37, Monday, November 25, 2024, Cheaha State Park, Delta, AL - 144.4 Miles,1,964.6 Miles for the Trip

A warm night - it didn't go below 50°F overnight & was 54°F for my morning walk. After breakfast I packed up the trailer and headed out of the park around 9:30. Lots of twisty 2 lane roads at both the start & end of the trip. Cheaha State Park is the highest point in Alabama and I gained almost 2000' by the time I hit my site.

I'm in site 17, a full hookup site that just fits the truck & trailer. The site is on fine gravel with a picnic table & fire pit. Close to the bathrooms. A little tough to get into because of both an up slope & narrow entrance going in. I'm here through Thanksgiving - 6 nights. $37.47 per night with all fees.

I checked both Verizon & AT&T, and bad news - while I get a bar or two on each, no data. AT&T shows no data connection, while Verizon shows data, but doesn't connect to anything. It might get better late at night, but it didn't. The reviews at RV Life showed AT&T connectivity but both my AT&T & Verizon iPhones shows is SOS, which means it found a signal, but it wasn't AT&T or Verizon.

After setting up I decided to head to Walmart & Camping World. 25 miles away and almost an hour drive. Camping World didn't have bags for RV mats and suggested Amazon. Right now I'm sitting in their parking lot posting (using AT&T) the last three journal entries as well as this one as of 4:00.

So, again journal entries may come as a group when I make the 25 mile drive to the Internet.

I bought gas at the Murphy's at Walmart for $2.63 a gallon, then headed back to the campground. By the time I got there it was 5:20 so I unpacked 10 bags of groceries and made dinner.

Included with the campground map and campground rules is a note that it will freeze tonight (at 6:30 it was still 61°F outside) so we are required to disconnect our water connection so the frost proof faucet can drain. While it is true that it won't drain unless air can get into the open end of the faucet, I doubt we will have a hard freeze tonight. I cracked my connection enough so the standing pipe drained anyway. I'll just tighten it when I go for my walk.

Dinner was a Lean Cuisine Sweet & Sour Chicken meal.

2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 36

Day 36, Sunday, November 24, 2024, Burchfield Branch COE Park, Adger, AL, Day 3 - 0 Miles,1,820.2 Miles for the Trip

I was relaxing and reading last night around 10:00 when the sound of engines and more slowly increased on the river. I looked out and all I could see was a row of yellow lights & a bunch of white spotlights. Eventually, I guessed it was a string of barges & a tug. Surprised that they are running in the dark, but I suspect they know the route. And yes, what I thought was a lake is a river - the Black Warrior River. There is a sign stating that there is a Dam 17 miles down river. It looks like there are locks and the river can be navigated all the way through Tuscaloosa to Moundville (that has a campground I've stayed at on other trips & nice museum) Maybe not all the way - the map doesn't show a lock around the Holt Dam just north of Tuscaloosa. I took a photo of the map:

Not as cold last night, down to 41°F by morning. I still wore my quilted jacket for my morning walk, but didn't need the gloves. I took my camera and found the Great Blue Heron by the swimming area. I also found the showers listed in the campground description - outdoor cold water showers. Not sure I'm ready to use them. It reminds me of the showers listed in the description of the Imperial Dam LTVA in California. Yes, there are showers at the bathroom. No hot water and they are on the outside of the building. I have seen folks using them, but they were wearing bathing suits.

On the way back to the trailer a tug pushing a string of coal barges went by.

While the night wasn't as cold, it was still too cool to comfortably sit outside, at least in the morning. Still only 52°F at 11:00. I finished Whiteout by Ken Follett, and started the 6th Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2020, edited by Diana Gabaldon.

Around 1:00 it was warm enough to enjoy sitting outside. It even reached the point where I looked for partial shade. 69°F at 4:00. The heron stopped by for a visit.

Dinner was Barber Foods Chicken Cordon Bleu & asparagus.

2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 35

Day 35, Saturday, November 23, 2024, Burchfield Branch COE Park, Adger, AL, Day 2 - 0 Miles,1,820.2 Miles for the Trip

A cool night, down to 34°F. The electric heater kept the trailer at 64°F without needing to add the propane furnace. Since the furnace produces almost twice the BTUs of the electric heater, it is set to come on a couple of degrees below the electric heater & only comes on as needed.

My very close next door neighbors headed out at 6:30AM. They used an impact driver to run up their stabilizers. While I also use one, I have it set on drill which eliminates the hammer noise. Not so the neighbors (and many others at other campgrounds). I have to admit that leaving the impact driver on an impact setting saves twisted wrists, but it sure does make a lot more noise!

I took my camera on my morning walk and found both a tree full of vultures, and the Great Blue Heron. The turtles are slowly climbing back on their log.

Flying Away With Breakfast

Breakfast

During breakfast the heron moved to the weeds behind my site. Fun to watch it hunt. While eating breakfast, the heron got breakfast as well.

I have to admit I miss my usual morning reading emails and visiting forums, but with no internet I'm reading my Kindle. Current book is Whiteout by Ken Follett. I am able to listen to Weekend Edition on the Alabama Public Radio station.

I took another walk along the row of campsites a little after lunch. 55°F, comfortable without a coat if you are in the sun. I was looking for a dumpster. If there is one, it must be well outside the campground.

I made a temporary repair on my kitchen window. It has been repaired two previous times, the first to epoxy the aluminum track used to open the window to the glass after the 3M tape Hehr used to attach it failed. After that, the rollers that ride in the aluminum track died & I purchased a new window crank assembly with rollers. On this trip that failed. The permanent solution is to get a replacement window which I'll do when I get back to Oswego. I'm a bit nervous about ordering a replacement since Hehr was bought out by Lippert about the same time that my trailer was built. I'll ask Escape if they can give me the specs for the window, but when I tried that to be sure I was ordering the correct window crank, they couldn't tell me if the part number I had was correct.

For now, I drilled a couple of holes in the aluminum track and used a couple of plastic zip ties to hold the track (and window) closed. I will no longer be able to open the window (which was my favorite for ventilation) but at least it will stay closed rather than flopping open in the breeze or while I'm driving down the road.

By 3:00 it had warmed up to 62°F so I sat outside in the sun reading until dinner.

Dinner was Marie Callender's Orange Chicken Bowl. Good, but too much orange sauce.

Until Monday -
