Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 14

Monday, May 25, 2026 - Day 14, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada, Day 7 - 0 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip

While there are a few of us left, most pulled out this morning. Light rain during the early morning, but the sun came out around 2:00. We are hoping to dry things out before we pack them for the trip home tomorrow. During my morning walk I saw the swans, but they were too far away for a photo.

I finished off the cornbread for lunch and spent most of the day reading. Current book is The Horror at Murden Cove by D. D. Black. It is the 4th book in the Austin series. Not the greatest detective series, but I'm enjoying them. As to audio books, I am finishing up Jenn Lyons' The Ruin of Kings & downloaded Apostle's Cove by William Kent Krueger for the trip home.

Dinner was cheese brats, more leftovers, & Bush beans.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 13

Sunday, May 24, 2026 - Day 13, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada, Day 6 - 0 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip

Many folks packed up in a light rain/mist this morning, but there are still plenty of trailers left in the campground. Back at the trailer I made a batch of cornbread. Guido & Anne stopped over to nibble. We will probably do in the rest of it for dinner. We will probably eat in the trailer since it is still misting out & only 54°F.

Around 2:00 I headed to the shower. A little cool getting dry since I don't believe the heat in the place is on or it is set lower than 54°F.

Dinner was left overs - beans from last night as well as tortellini salad & blueberry pie, pork loin from the other day & chicken Alfredo.

The dates for next year's EggFest Ontario are May 28 - 30 here at Rideau Acres. See you then!

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 11

Friday, May 22, 2026 - Day 11, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada, Day 4 - 0 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip Sorry this is out of order, I somehow didn'tt post it last night.

Another cool night going down to 37°F early this morning. It warmed up, hitting 60°F by noon. I took my camera during my morning walk hoping to catch the swans that are on the lake next to the campground. No swans, but I did see more trailers:

Around 10:30 Steve and his wife stopped by for a short visit. Steve & I have been trading favorite authors over email for a couple of years and have finally met in person. On the way back to the trailer I met the campground Guineau Fowl.

After they left I continued putting together a blueberry pie for the pot luck dinner tomorrow. A bit different from other pot lucks I've attended - we go by tables; the Guidos & I are at the Schitt's Creek or Sheets Creek table. Not sure if it is named after the TV show or the creek in NY unless I see the spelling of the name. In any case I'm bring my usual blueberry pie.

Around 1:30 we walked to the office to pick up tickets for the breakfast tomorrow morning.

Another walk around the campground:

Dinner was a pork loin & Bush Beans.

After dinner there was a group campfire (actually, 2 campfires in the same circle). I took photos in a couple of directions so I could get all that were there.

As usual, more images at today's LakeshoreImages page.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 12

Saturday, May 23, 2026 - Day 12, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada, Day 5 - 0 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip Sorry this is out of order - Somehow I didn't post Friday's journal last night.

Saturday started off with a pancake breakfast put together by the Rotary Club. Well organized & good food!

After breakfast a trip around the campground including one of the workshops on polishing your trailer, making sushi & lithium batteries:

A light rain started around 2:00 but folks are still wandering around the campground to check out trailers as well as attend the workshops.

As usual, more photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.

Around 5:00 the rain went from light to medium. I think we will take the truck to get to the pot luck. It isn't all that long a walk, but in the rain everything will get wet. While that is somewhat OK for me, I can't have that happen to the pie!

It did start to rain a bit heavier so we took the truck. The "family style" dinner was quite different from a pot luck. First difference - no drinks brought in from the outside, including sealed water bottles. They did have free water along with a cash bar. Next - our table was Up Shits Creek, not Schitt's Creek or Sheets Creek. Sign to prove it. Next - we were the only ones at our table so the meal started out to be tortellini salad & blueberry pie. OK for veterinarians, but we would have liked more verify We found another pair of folks that were at a table with just two of them & invited them to join us which added a dessert for them & sausage & baked beans for us.

While the rain let up as we left the hall, it was windy. When we got back to the trailers we discovered how windy - the staked down Clam was half folded sitting behind my trailer. Not sure how it made it there, but we did find all the nails holding it down & replaced them with much larger ones.

So ends the day!

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 10

Thursday, May 21, 2026 - Day 10, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada, Day 3 - 0 Miles for the day, 819.4 Miles for the trip

There a a couple of pairs of Canada geese in the park so you need to watch where you step. We also had a nice sunset last night:

It cooled down last night, hitting 47°F by morning. During my morning walk I made a trip to the dumpsters. There may be more, but it looks like there is only one group for the entire campground. Five of them next to the dump station.

I finished he Bones at No Point by D. D. Black, liked it and started the second in the series The Shadows of Pike Place. I called mt dentist in Oswego - last evening I broke a tooth. Seems like I do this once a year, and never when I'm home. It doesn't hurt so they will decide what to do when I go in for my cleaning & check up on May 27th.

I spent most of the morning reading. Trailers are starting to arrive. Another Escape ( a 19) so I won't feel out of place as a newer trailer as well as a Trillium, a Boler & a Ventura arrived around noon. More arrived throughout the day:

More photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.

I stopped over at Ron & Liz's Lil Snoozy to pay my $10.00 for the rally and picked up a pin & the schedule as well as a sign that my trailer was open to viewing.

I made a couple of rounds of the camping area taking more photos, then sat at the hummingbird feeder for a bit. There at least two of them since I watched them fight. This one looks to be a female.

Dinner was Ann's Chicken Alfredo & cherries for dessert.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 9

Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - Day 9, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada - 0 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip

While it was predicted to cool down, it is still 72°F at 10:00AM. I walked around part of the campground this morning and it looks like the sites for the rally are in the same general area we are in. Can't be sure, because there are multiple sites with the dame number but a different prefix.

The man's bathroom has two toilet stalls that have a standard door. The problem is the automatic light control clicks off about 3 minutes after you sit down. It gets dark even is the daytime. Can't wait to see what happens in the shower.

Around 1:00 I headed for a shower. The lights stayed on. Guido mentioned that about half the holes in the shower head were clogged, making the stream painful. I took a toothpick with me and opened the clogged ones, and after that it was comfortable. Hard to adjust between too hot & too cold. 2 shelves in the shower, a bench, Three double hooks & a towel rack in the drying area. The shower is a standard 30" one that is just a bit too small, but overall not too bad. A B rating.

We spent the rest of the afternoon in the Clam, It is cooling off at 64°F at 6:30, and windy enough that sitting outside even in the sun is getting uncomfortable. Current book is The Bones at No Point by D. D. Black.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 8

Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - Day 8, Rideau Acres, Kingston, Ontario Canada - 178.2 Miles for the day,819.4 Miles for the trip

Another warm day. It hit 82°F on the way here and when we arrived at the campground and is 74°F at 7:00.

No problem crossing into Canada other than a confusing sign that I was suppose to wait for, but didn't and got yelled at. Most of the Canadian part of the trip was on the 401 with one slow down for trucks painting new lines. On the last 1/2 mile to the campground there is a one lane bridge work site that uses a traffic light to let drivers take turns.

A very large campground. We are in sites 30 & 31 full hook up sites on gravel / grass. I have a picnic table. The site needed 3/4" side to side & 1" drop to level the trailer. Bathrooms (with one shower) are a short distance from the site. No idea how close we are to the rally - the place has hundreds of sites. Both sites look like they will get wet if (I should say when) it rains. Total charges for a week stay are $468.92 Canadian which works out to $349.44 US or $49.92 per night.

Me in Site 30

The Guidos in Site 31

I set up the Starlink Mini since my AT&T doesn't roam. Verizon does, but I have 100 GB of data left on the Starlink and Verizon slows down after a couple of MB or use. Starlink shows 108Mbps down & 19Mbps up with some minor dropouts because a tree in in the way.

After setting up I headed to the nearest grocery store (2 1/2 miles away) for blueberries, juice and a tomato for dinner. It is hard to figure amounts since everything is metric.

Dinner was Bubba Chicken Burgers & Bush beans.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 7

Monday, May 18, 2026 - Blue Haven Family Campground & Resort, Ellensburg Depot, NY - 235 Miles for the day, 641.2 Miles for the trip

Just a tiny bit of rain at the start & during the trip. Warm, with a high of 82°F on the drive & 77°F at Blue Haven when we arrived. Lots of 2 lane state roads in New Hampshire, about 90 miles on I 93? in Vermont. I'm glad Anne didn't use my location for Blue Haven in her GPS. Mine shows we are 45 miles from the place when I'm parked at my site. I deleted it and added the correct one for this place.

The owner or manager guided us to out sites over at least 20 speed bumps. We will have to plan extra time getting out of the place to get over them. We are in sites 5 & 6, full hookup sites on grass. Mine was level enough that I didn't need to unhook - level side to side & I raised the tongue 1 1/2". $72.10 per night with processing fee? and reservation fee. No near by bathrooms.

Me in site 6

The Guidos in site 5

The black flies are out & hungry! The Guidos used insect repellent but I can't stand the stuff so I did a lot of slapping. We decided to eat inside my trailer.

Dinner was a shrimp dish put together by Anne & a salad.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 6

Sunday, May 17, 2026 - Chocorua Camping Village KOA, Chocorua, NH, Day 5 - 0 Miles for the day, 406.2 Miles for the trip

Another warm day hitting 79°F at 1:00.

We did breakfast at the pavilion again this morning. Yesterday, a KOA adult serving of pancakes was 2; just about right. Today, the adult serving is three. Too much for me.

After breakfast it was back to the trailer. I watched a number of trailers leave, but there are still plenty of us that are here until tomorrow. I sat outside reading; current book is We Do Not Part by Han Kang. Guido dug out the folding ladder to reach the top of the Scamp to fix a leak.

During the afternoon Guido & I headed to the office to make reservations for next year but no one was home. We will stop by on the way out tomorrow or call them.

Dinner was smash burgers at Dave & Jackie's.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 5

Saturday, May 16, 2026 - Chocorua Camping Village KOA, Chocorua, NH, Day 4 - 0 Miles for the day, 406.2 Miles for the trip

While it was cool overnight, for the first time in a couple of days, no rain. Bright sunshine in the morning, and it reached 68°F by noon.

After pancakes provided by the KOA, I made a round of the campground taking some trailer photos:

As usual, more photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.

Just in case you are wondering where all that rain went, here is a photo of the near edge of the pond. Probably not the best picnic table or chairs to use.

At 2:00 Jeff & Dottie hosted games at the pavilion.

I spend much of the afternoon slow cooking a rack of baby back ribs on the grill. 3 hours at 300°F. They were nice & fall off the bone tender along with asparagus for dinner.

After dinner we went to the office for ice cream, sat around the campfire, and the Guidos joined a bunch on a tractor ride around the campground.

Trip to the Spring Fling, Day 4

Friday, May 15, 2026 - Chocorua Camping Village KOA, Chocorua, NH, Day 3 - 0 Miles for the day, 406.2 Miles for the trip

Another night of rain, heavy at times. The lake between my trailer & the deck got deeper & larger. It slowed down towards morning, and by 10:00 the lake was gone. Still having light rain.

Anne sent me a video & some stills from Jeff & Dottie's renewal of wedding vows that took place while I was baking pies:  Here are a couple of photos & a link to a videoMore at today's LakeshoreImages Page. There are more of each group of photos. I also started a page that is specific to the Spring Fling:  The Spring Fling 2026 page.  Same photos as on my journal pages, but without the trip details.

This morning I headed up to the pavilion around 10:00 for the cooking demo by Kim & Dennis. He made good use of a Blackstone Grill and told some great stories while making a cowboy breakfast.

The rain stopped around 11:00, turning into a mist, but started up again a little after 1:00. I stopped by the Painting With Sandy workshop as they were getting started. I'll go back a couple of times to see their progress.

At 2:00 they started to set up The Great Dump Race. With the off & on again rain (mostly on) there wasn't a huge crowd, but I did get a photo of the winners.

The pot luck stated at 5:00 at the pavilion. While it warmed up a bit to 55°F, there was still a rush for the booths near one of the propane heater trees.

After dinner there was a raffle & a 50 50 award.
