2024-25 Trip to the Southeast, Day 36

Day 36, Sunday, November 24, 2024, Burchfield Branch COE Park, Adger, AL, Day 3 - 0 Miles,1,820.2 Miles for the Trip

I was relaxing and reading last night around 10:00 when the sound of engines and more slowly increased on the river. I looked out and all I could see was a row of yellow lights & a bunch of white spotlights. Eventually, I guessed it was a string of barges & a tug. Surprised that they are running in the dark, but I suspect they know the route. And yes, what I thought was a lake is a river - the Black Warrior River. There is a sign stating that there is a Dam 17 miles down river. It looks like there are locks and the river can be navigated all the way through Tuscaloosa to Moundville (that has a campground I've stayed at on other trips & nice museum) Maybe not all the way - the map doesn't show a lock around the Holt Dam just north of Tuscaloosa. I took a photo of the map:

Not as cold last night, down to 41°F by morning. I still wore my quilted jacket for my morning walk, but didn't need the gloves. I took my camera and found the Great Blue Heron by the swimming area. I also found the showers listed in the campground description - outdoor cold water showers. Not sure I'm ready to use them. It reminds me of the showers listed in the description of the Imperial Dam LTVA in California. Yes, there are showers at the bathroom. No hot water and they are on the outside of the building. I have seen folks using them, but they were wearing bathing suits.

On the way back to the trailer a tug pushing a string of coal barges went by.

While the night wasn't as cold, it was still too cool to comfortably sit outside, at least in the morning. Still only 52°F at 11:00. I finished Whiteout by Ken Follett, and started the 6th Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2020, edited by Diana Gabaldon. 

Around 1:00 it was warm enough to enjoy sitting outside. It even reached the point where I looked for partial shade. 69°F at 4:00. The heron stopped by for a visit.

Dinner was Barber Foods Chicken Cordon Bleu & asparagus.
