I hope everyone has a safe & enjoyable New Year's Eve!
Another cold morning, but I'm getting used to it. I do think the Reflectix window panels are helping. The furnace seems to run a bit less overnight and the bed area is warmer with the same thermostat setting.
It didn't warm up during the day, but it is the middle of Winter. I didn't do much of anything other than read, check my usual fiberglass forums, and a few blogs & journals. I did do my best to get my various book keeping spreadsheets transfered over to new 2016 versions.
I'll be going next door for a drink or two, but don't expect to make it until midnight.
Dinner was the last of the frozen chili, and a southwest salad.
Until Tomorrow -
My blog follows my travels through the US & Canada in an Escape 21 Travel Trailer towed by a Ford F150 3.5 Ecoboost Off Road. For anyone interested in additional photos I have a Web Page with photos & journals of all my trips. Shortcut to first Blogger post

Wednesday, December 30, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 42, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
After breakfast it was off to town to do a little shopping at some of the new booths. I didn't buy much, but it is amazing how the new ones spring up everywhere. The parking is getting difficult - took awhile to find a space. After wandering around, I drove to the propane store & filled my empty tank.
Back at the trailer I sat around & read, then decided to go to the food store for a steak for dinner which was combined with a quick rice dish. A nice meal!

Tuesday, December 29, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 41, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Well, no conclusion on whether the Reflectix helped; it was 10 degrees warmer overnight so it is hard to tell. I'll keep trying them for awhile & hope to come to a decision on whether they are worth the trouble (and difficulty peaking out the windows). They do block a lot of light; good if you want to sleep early or late, but unless you wait until after sunset, putting them in makes the trailer pretty dark. I try to keep the shades up (and Reflectix uninstalled) on the windows that still have sun coming in to provide solar heating, but add the Reflectix on the shaded windows.
After breakfast I did my typical forum reading, then headed to Parker for a haircut, Walmart & Safeway. I stopped at Mike's Barber shop (no Mike, but three barbers and a waiting line). Got a good haircut, then headed to Walmart & Safeway to stock up. I couldn't find the Italian Style Chicken Meatballs I really liked, so I ended up with some Italian Turkey ones. Tried them tonight for dinner and they are no where near as good. Oh well, I'll keep an eye out for the chicken ones.
I did a little reading, met and chatted with a Scamp owner that isn't staying here in La Posa West but wanted to look at the Escape, then cooked the Spaghetti & meatballs for dinner.

Monday, December 28, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 40, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
The walk for coffee this morning included a hooded sweatshirt, hat, quilted vest, and gloves; 26°F. After breakfast I spent most of the day doing nothing. I did dig out the Reflectix panels I made to fit the windows. I made them for the trip to Alaska, but never needed them. They have been sitting rolled up in one of the under bench storage cabinets, and I decided it was time to give them a try. No idea if it will make it easier to heat the trailer overnight, particularly because most of the windows are double pane, but worth a try. According to the local weather reports, the nights are going to be near freezing for the near future. I don't mind burning the propane, but am concerned with multiple cloudy days & getting the batteries back to full after a night of running the furnace.
Other than that, I spent the day in the trailer reading & working on the computer. I have an invite for chili with the couple in the Class A RV that I helped with their electrical problems yesterday, so I won't have to cook anything. Funny, my plans for dinner before they invited me was to eat the last batch of chili from the freezer.

Sunday, December 27, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 39, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Another day in the desert. I walked to the gas station for coffee. $.50 this morning. I don't know what the criteria for coffee refill costs are; I've been charged everything from $.50 to $.75 for the same insulated 24 oz coffee mug. I do know it is difficult on a cold morning to go the extra mile walk, passing by the fancy coffee stand (where the mug filling is $4.00 for plain coffee & $5.00 for a mocha) but I did it.
I met a couple in a 32' Class A that was having problems with a couple of 120v receptacles. Did some testing & finally discovered that all it needed was a reset of a circuit breaker. Of course, as an "electronics technician", I didn't immediately go for the obvious (the circuit breaker), but pulled the offending outlet checking for loose wiring, etc before finding the real problem. I did my Johnny Appleseed of LED lighting & left them one LED lamp for their most used fixture. I buy a batch of them cheap from China & give them away to convince people that they are the best way to save power when boondocking.
After that I decided to try the Dutch Oven for baking a frozen TV type dinner. I have a couple that I keep in the freezer for when I have hookups to bake in the toaster oven, but since I don't plan of hookups for awhile & don't have a gas oven in the trailer, I tried the Volcano Grill on propane with the Dutch Oven inside. A bit tricky to keep the temperature at 350°F (in fact I went over a bit & melted a hole in the bottom of the plastic tray) but it worked. One Maria Callender's Country Fried Chicken Dinner with slightly browned baked potatoes. Not too bad for a first attempt. All I've cooked in the Dutch Oven up to now was burritos.
After dinner I did some RV forum postings, then watched the sunset. The furnace came on at 6:19, so I expect it is going to be another cool night.

Valerie & Zoe's Christmas Drawings |
Saturday, December 26, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 38, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
I'm getting tired of saying "another cool night", but it was. A cool & windy morning; the furnace is still cycling on (set at 58°F) at 10:30AM. The wind is blowing dust clouds across the campground, rocking the trailer, even blowing over the solar panel; all together an unpleasant morning.
It didn't get much better throughout the day. The wind is still rocking the trailer. It got bad enough that I put the front window shield back down; it was flapping in the breeze. Lots of blown down tents, etc. There is enough dust in the air that you can't see any of the mountains surrounding the campground. Even the hummingbird feeder blew over!
I spent most of the day sitting in the trailer reading. I did make a run for coffee before breakfast & while the wind was still gentle gusts. Dinner will either be soup cooked on the stove in the trailer, or a trip to a local restaurant.
I did take a photo of my Grand Kid's drawings hung on about the only wall section large enough.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 37
A Gyrocopter Over the Campground |
Merry Christmas! I talked to relatives & friends on the phone (all who, with the exception of friends in Golden, CO, seem to be in warmer places, including, of course, home in Oswego, NY) as well as a Skype session with my daughter's family in Takoma Park, MD. I opened my Christmas presents from the kids, and have jigsaw puzzle to put together, some Christmas coffee, a wonderful drawing from each grand daughter, cookies and more goodies.
My Christmas present to myself was a trip to the dump station. While I might have been able to put it off until tomorrow, it wouldn't be good to discover the black tank full during a bathroom run at at 3:00AM! I dumped both tanks & filled the fresh water tank. There is a Scamp 16 parked a little beyond the dump station, but their tow vehicle was gone & it didn't look like anyone was home.
I positioned the trailer a bit differently so I could more easily watch the moon & sun rise out the back window, as well as the sunset out the front. That meant moving the door mat, solar panel, etc - we will see if the new position works out.
I sat out & read a bit, then decided to try the Times Three Family Restaurant next to McDonalds. I had the cod dinner, OK and large portions, but I preferred the cod dinner at Sweet Darlene's, where it was $2.00 cheaper and less greasy. Still, one can't complain about the restaurant prices in Quartzsite.
I tried to sit out a bit longer when I got back to the trailer, but it is cooling down quickly. According to the Phoenix NPR station, it is going to be much cooler than normal for the next 4-5 days.
I did take a couple of photos today - a gyrocopter buzzed the campground long enough for me to dig out the camera. One more view at today's LakeshoreImages page.

Thursday, December 24, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 36, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
I hope everyone is having a great Christmas eve. Things are pretty quiet here at Quartzsite. I made a run into town & found many of the stores & shops closed, although the grocery stores are open until the evening.
I spent most of the day sitting around reading, although I did have one domestic project - defrosting the refrigerator. While I have to defrost the cooling fins every couple of weeks most of the time, here in the desert I only have to do it once a month, if that. I toss the stuff in the freezer into my ice chest, then use a plastic putty knife to scrape/chip the ice off the fins. It only takes about 20 minutes, and then about 3-4 hours for the refrigerator & freezer to recover. While the wind died down for most of the day, it is definitely a bit cooler both last night & today. Still slightly warmer than Oswego, NY (although only slightly). I did notice that my black tank is nearing time to head to the dump station. I may have to make a trip tomorrow or the next day.
I forgot to mention that Ken & Diana, Escape 5.0TA owners, stopped by yesterday for a chat. They didn't have the trailer with them, but were passing by & saw the trailer. Hope to run into them again...
Dinner will be a grilled Turkey Bubba burger & chips.

Another warm night - the furnace didn't come on until around 7:00AM, and then only once for about a minute. Mostly sunny today, with a few clouds, and temperatures in the high 60's.
I did even less than yesterday. After a walk for coffee & breakfast I did some on line reading, then sat outside & finished a J. A. Jance novel. That was about it for the day.
Dinner will be a left over piece of chicken & snap peas.

Tuesday, December 22, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 34, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Warm overnight - I woke up to 51°F 6:00AM. A cool, cloudy day with not quite enough sun to bring the batteries back to full even with limiting the use of electricity. I did take a break from electrical fasting to write & post today's page during the peak of the solar output, although at 2:30 there was barely enough current from the panels to power the laptop.
I took a break earlier & went in search of a needle & thread. I thought I had one of those "emergency" sewing kits, but while I found three eyeglasses repair kits, no sewing kit. One of my brand new flannel shirts had a button fall off the first time I buttoned it (what do you want for $12.00?) I found a sewing kit for $1.00 at the dollar store (where else?) I do wish it came with a carrying case, but for a buck I can't complain, and a zip lock bag works.
After sewing the button back on the shirt, I sat in the trailer and read. Far too windy to sit outside, although the temperature isn't too bad at 67°F. We are suppose to have cloudy days right up until Christmas.
I made reservations for the 8th Townsend, TN rally in April. I'm reserved for site 2 April 13 - 18th. After that it is back home to Oswego.
Dinner will be the last of the left over Mexican rice & something that I haven't picked out yet. I guess it will have to be something that can be cooked frozen!

Monday, December 21, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 33, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
It was domestic Monday. I started out cleaning the trailer. One thing you get a lot of for free at Quartzsite is dust. While it is obvious when the wind is blowing hard, even on calm days there always seems to be a bit in the air, and, of course, settled into the trailer.
After dusting, sweeping, and picking up some clutter produced by the trailer staying in one place too long, I gathered together a week plus worth of dirty clothes, and headed to the laundromat. I ended up doing 3 loads of laundry. While everything was in the dryers, I had a full sized shower. It felt great to be able to run as much water for as long as I wanted (well, they do have a 20 minute limit on showers, but I could never take one for that long)!
I did a little food shopping on the way back, filled an empty propane tank (Propane is getting less expensive each time I fill a tank). Today it was $1.99 a gallon.
I fooled around with my portable solar panel, but have not found a way to convince either its controller or the GoPower one built into the trailer that it should remain in the absorption mode long enough to fully recharge the batteries. They both switch down to the float stage (13.6V) while the batteries are still down 10 amp hours from full. I may be expecting too much but it would be nice to get that last little bit into the batteries, particularly since we are expecting some cloudy days ahead.
I sat & read, enjoying the 65°F afternoon. Dinner will be a grilled chicken patty, some of the left over Mexican rice from yesterday, and a fruit cup.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 32 & Kofa Wildlife Refuge
California Fan Palm, Kofa Wildlife Refuge |
I decided to check out the Kofa National Wildlife Reserve after breakfast & my usual forum reading. The Palm Canyon road is about 18 miles south of Quartzsite. A fairly good dirt road (a bit wash-boarded, and you do have to keep an eye out for large stones in the road) about 6 miles in from US 95. Not a bad hike to the viewing area for the palms, although much of it is up a rocky wash & you do gain some altitude.
The palms are in side canyons to the left of the trail (on the way up). I met three ladies who are staying in La Posa South at the end of the trail. We talked a bit, then I headed back to the RAV4. Lots more photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.
On the way back to La Posa West, I stopped at another section of the Refuge, Crystal Hill. Another 6 mile long drive on a dirt road in worse shape than Palm Canyon Road, but as long as you stay within the speed limit of 25MPH, it is certainly do able in any vehicle. In the mineral collecting area you are allowed to collect 10 specimens or 10 pounds of quartz. The description in the Crystal Hill Area handout describes crystals of quartz, however all I found was white chunks of rock, no multi sided, clear crystals such as you find at Herkimer, NY. By the way, camping is allowed in both areas - 14 days & some restrictions on where. I did see quite a few RVs, including a Casita 16.
After that it was back to the campground & a bit or reading. Dinner will be a grilled chicken thigh, rice & snap peas.

Saturday, December 19, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 31, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Another nice warm day, although still hitting the low 30's at night. I was down by 30 amp hours by morning, as of 3:00 I'm still down by 10. Something is going on with my solar controller - it is dropping down to the float stage (where it doesn't provide more than a amp or two) earlier than I'd like so even though I have plenty of sun left, the charge rate is so slow that I don't fill the batteries by dark. The controller thinks the batteries are full, but the TriMetric battery monitor keeps track of amp hours out & into the batteries & gives a more accurate picture of their condition.
I didn't do much of anything today, just read some forums & web pages, finished a book & started a new one, and sat out in the sun. I took a break & spent some time putting together my banking & bills spreadsheets for 2016.
Dinner was a couple of burritos cooked in the Dutch oven.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 30 & Quartzsite Photos
La Posa South Office |
Friday, December 18, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 30, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Much warmer today; I'm finally beating out the temperatures in Oswego, NY! I walked to the gas station for coffee this morning. Yesterday, rather than going all the way to the gas station, I stopped at the Espresso wagon on the corner of US 95 & Kuehn St (the first light heading into town from the campground), a much shorter walk. The only problem is a plain coffee from them is 6 times the $.65 at the gas station, and I do need the exercise of the longer walk. Still, their latte was pretty good (but even more expensive). I just can't get used to paying over $4.00 for a cup of coffee! (Obviously I don't spend much time at Starbucks!)
After breakfast I checked with the FedEx tracking to see how far along my daughter's package was in its travels from Washington, DC. It left Yuma this morning, and should be in Quartzsite at the Good Times building by the end of the day. After lunch I headed out to take some photos of Quartzsite. Since I've been here a month, I thought I'd show some of the sights. Lots of activity all around Quartzsite - the large gem show opens the first week of January, and after that the big tent RV show opens. All kinds of booths, RV stores, etc are moving in.
The campground is divided into 4 sections, (La Posa West, La Posa East, La Posa South & La Posa Tyson Wash), each with a brick building (complete with solar power for the building & the section host) that issues permits. I only included a photo of La Posa South - they all look the same. If you read books, stop at each - they keep a library of books to trade in each office, have maps of the campground and other general information. For those that have never been here, you purchase either a $40.00 2 week or $180.00 season (7 months) permit, then find a spot to park. You are good just about anywhere, although it is a bad idea to park in a wash - while dry now, they can become rivers in a rainstorm.
If you don't want to stay for 2 weeks, you can camp for free at a couple of areas outside of Quartzsite. While free and limited to a 2 week stay, you don't get access to the dumpsters, dump stations or water fill stations at the LTVAs. The Pit Stop on AZ 95 (North of I 10 it is AZ 95, South it is US 95) has a dump station, fresh water & dumpsters, all for a fee.
While it is filling up, there are still many parts of the LTVAs that you can be by yourself. I just had a 5th wheel pull in just in front of my trailer; not sure why he wanted to be so close, but if it really bothers me, I'll move the next time I take the trailer to the dump station.
After photos of a couple more features of the LTVA (Long Term Visitors Area) I drove around town & took photos of some of the places I've spent time visiting or shopping. Many more photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.
I checked at the Good Times when I stopped to take a photo & my package was in. $1.00 charge to pick it up - Much easier than trying to pick up a package at the Post Office since they only do General Delivery 11:00AM - 1:00PM, and there is usually a line out the door.
Dinner is going to be a trip with Glenda to Sweet Darlene's for their Friday all you can eat cod dinner. I had it a couple of weeks ago & found it much better than the pollack at the Grubstake (and it arrived much faster!)

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 29
Thursday, December 17, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 29, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Another cold night, but the day was warmer than yesterday. I drove to Blythe for a checkup on my eye pressure. The added drop of a new medication did the trick - my pressure is now lower than it has been over the last couple of biannual checkups. The Dr. gave me a sample two weeks ago, and phoned in the prescription today. Since he was at another office & didn't have the paperwork from my previous visit with him, he got the number of drops & number of eyes wrong. I don't know whether to correct it or not. The single 5 ml bottle would cost me a $50.00 copay if it is a 90 day, one drop in one eye script, (what I expected), and, like my other one drop/one eye medication, actually lasts around 4 months (the 5ml bottle is the smallest they make). He called in a prescription for one drop in each eye twice a day with no # of days. It was filled as a single bottle & 25 days. The interesting thing is both prescriptions end up being one 5ml bottle but the 25 day cost a $25.00 copay & the 90 day is a $50.00 copay for the same thing. Drug plans are weird!
I did a little shopping in Blythe. Bought a pair of long johns since the weather seems to require them. I also bought a couple of flannel shirts so now I'm ready for winter. That probably means it will get warm immediately, but if it does, it was worth the purchase price. I also stopped at Albertson for some fruit juice & other supplies that are harder to find in Quartzsite.
Dinner was a Bubba Burger & the rest of the eFoods Tortilla soup and Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream for dessert..

Wednesday, December 16, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 28, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
You know I'm getting tired of these cold nights here at Quartzsite! 25°F last night, again, it was warmer back in Oswego in upstate NY. After my morning walk I ate breakfast (made coffee rather than walked to the gas station). Did some forum reading, and waited for the sun to warm up the trailer. It never got all that warm outside - today's high was 56°F, but with the wind it felt colder.
After lunch I drove to town. The "season" is getting underway. 10 - 15 new stalls selling just about anything you can think of (and many things you would never think of or even want) open up every day. Lot of tools, jewelry, RV parts, etc. The most interesting are the ones that have tables filled with what looks like the sweepings of a hardware store floor after a hurricane went through. You paw through the stuff & ask "how much"? The sellers must know each other - the prices are usually the same no matter where or how well displayed.
For 2 hours of walking around, I ended up buying 2 books. Not very productive, but then, I don't have to be.
Dinner was spaghetti & meatballs.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 27, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
A couple more meteors last night, but I wouldn't call it a storm. In any case, it soon got too cold to stand outside & watch. I did catch one through the trailer back window after climbing back inside.
Another slow day. I walked to the gas station for coffee, then I set up the hummingbird feeder, put down my door mat, did some housecleaning, and sat around and read. Spent some time on the fiberglass forums, answered some email, and did little else.
Dinner was a Bubba Burger & eFoods Tortilla soup. The eFoods soup is part of a sample packet I sent for a couple of years ago. Freeze dried stuff that is suppose to keep for years. It was a free sample, however you do have to put up with monthly email for the rest of your life if you order it. Actually, it was pretty good. My only gripe is they stated it was "X" number of meals, but the packaging was 4 meals per envelope, so making it for one doesn't work well. I had the impression it came as individual meals. In any case, I can't complain about the cost or quality.

Monday, December 14, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 26, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
I watched the Geminid meteor shower for awhile last night and saw a couple. Later, the clouds moved in, and after midnight, it started to rain. It rained off & on throughout the rest of the night. I'm glad I didn't wait until today to drive back to Quartzsite. The Phoenix radio station mentioned I 17 & I 40 were both snow & ice covered at the higher altitudes, part of which would have included my drive back.
It didn't warm up much today - the high was 58°F. According to the weather reports, it is going to be cool during the next couple of days, and below freezing during the overnights. This seems to be one of those years that the northeast is doing better than here in the southwest. It hit 63°F today in my home town of Oswego, NY, and is currently warmer there than here at Quartzsite. Oh well, I'm sure that will change soon.
I drove into town to buy some books at one of the used book booths, and next door saw some meteorites at a nearby table. So, I bought one. A nice, heavy iron rock for $20.00. No idea if it is a deal or not, but I've always wanted one & I already have a place picked out for it back home.
It was too cool to sit outside, so I stayed in the trailer. I did some reading, caught up on web pages & forums, then cooked a couple of Cheese Brats & baked beans for dinner.

Sunday, December 13, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 25, 230.8 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip
Well, for the start of the second month of this trip I'm back in Quartzsite. I hope the decision to come back a day early was the correct one - I did want to explore some of the hiking trails around Sedona, and today would have been a good day for it. Cool and dry with clear skies. The predictions are for very cold overnight temperatures with snow on Monday so I left. While I couldn't get a refund for Sunday night since they require a 72 hour cancellation notice, I did talk the Rancho Sedona RV Park staff into a Gift Certificate for one night anytime in the future. While I'm not all that in love with the city, the surrounding hiking opportunities will probably bring me back in the future.
The drive back was OK. No black ice or snow, although the temperature was still in the 20's when I left the campground at 10:00AM. I stopped for fuel & lunch at Anthem, AZ. Had a great Buttermilk Chicken sandwich at McDonalds. I have no idea why they are so different at different McDonalds, but so far I've had two good ones & one that was barely edible.
I pulled into Quartzsite around 3:00, drove to La Posa South to fill my fresh water tank, then headed back to my old location in La Posa West. Vincent (one of my Casita neighbors) is leaving tomorrow so we will be down to two fiberglass trailers in the neighborhood. I decided to keep the numbering from before, making this day 25 at Quartzsite rather than starting over again with the Sedona break.
I'm now getting used to running on batteries. Two days plugged in can lead to bad habits of leaving lights on, etc. Running the electric heater to keep the trailer at 68 - 70 degrees wasn't too bad either.
Dinner will be cheese & crackers - the McDonalds stop was pretty late & I'm still full.

Rancho Sedona RV Park & Scamp Camp, AZ, Day 2
Snow! |
Well, it rained off & on most of the night, including a bit of thunder & lightning. I woke up to large drips coming off the overhead trees, slid up the blinds on the back window, and was greeted by a layer of white. Just about everything was covered with a thin layer of snow.
We slowly gathered at the end of the campground prior to starting the trailer tours. We canceled my Digital Photography workshop - too cold & too much rain. We will try again later in the day. I'll post this now & add more as the day goes on. As usual, more photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.
Well, the "later in the day" didn't happen. While the weather cleared up a bit, it was still pretty cold, and the Sedona Christmas activities picked up. I did make a round of the trailers, trying to shoot each of them, with the owners if they were available.
After that I walked around downtown, took a couple of photos of the view along the road, then went to the Festival of Lights at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Lots of stages with performers, Christmas lights & six thousand luminaries (paper bags with candles inside). Lots of photos both before & after a Fajitas dinner at the Rincon Del Tlaquepaque Mexican Restaurant. The dinner was great, the lights OK, although I've done the luminaries with white bags instead of brown ones and they are far more impressive (and brighter) in white bakery bags. Still, a commercial, but nice party.
I got back to the trailer around 6:00 & posted the rest of today's page, including many photos of the festival. While I originally planned to stay Sunday, the weather report is for another storm with colder temperatures to arrive on Monday, so I am leaving tomorrow to head back to Quartzsite.

Rancho Sedona RV Park & Scamp Camp, AZ
Entering Sedona, AZ |
I got a fairly early start & left Quartzsite around 8:15. A cloudy day, so driving east into the sun wasn't too bad. Most of the drive was on I10 & I17, with a bypass of Phoenix on Loop 303 and the final drive into Sedona on AZ 179.
I stopped to take a few photos at the first "Scenic" pull off coming into Sedona, but will probably get out to take some more photos tomorrow. I'm in site 22, a full hookup (including cable) site for $49.50 per night with a Good Sam discount. Lots of Scamps & Escapes here as well as a Casita & a Lil' Snoozy. We even have a small class A as part of the Scamp Camp weekend. More photos at today's LakeshoreImages page.
While it isn't snowing (yet) is is cold. Very dark skies and a tiny bit of rain. The prediction is for 1" - 3" of snow overnight here in Sedona. I don't really care as long as it is gone by the time I head back to Quartzsite on Monday.
After setting up the trailer I made a quick run to Safeway for food. I bought too much, but was overwhelmed by a large grocery store! My freezer is completely filled, and I have enough snacks for at least the weekend.
After getting back I joined a shivering circle of fiberglass trailer owners saying hello & introducing each other. It finally got cold enough that I headed back to the trailer, dug out the toaster oven (I love having electricity from a utility rather than my batteries) and baked a chicken pot pie. While cooking the pie & typing this page it rained (or sleeted, hard to tell from inside the trailer & I'm not going out) off & on.

Thursday, December 10, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 24, 3 Miles, 3,588.9 Miles for the Trip
Another beautiful day in Quartzsite! I went for my usual walk (no coffee today), ate breakfast, then sat around outside. It was actually warm enough by 10:00AM. A little after lunch I packed up & hooked up the trailer & drove to the dump station. While I could have dumped on the way out of the campground tomorrow, you never know how busy the place will be. After dumping, I went into town for propane, filling a near empty trailer bottle & my 10lb stove tank. I did put 3 miles on the trailer!
Back to the trailer and more sitting around reading. Another Casita showed up; this one from Pennsylvania. They didn't stay, but had questions about the LTVA. Vincent & I may have talked them into coming to the February rally at Dome Rock.
That was about it for the day. I didn't unhook, just opened the front window & cranked down the stabilizers so it will be a quick up & out in the morning heading to Sedona for the Scamp Camp Christmas Rally.
Dinner was soup & a sandwich.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 23, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
I walked to the gas station on Main St for coffee this morning. It was warm enough that I could skip the gloves & down filled vest (44°F when I left the trailer). After breakfast I read my usual forums & blogs, then drove into town to buy some crimp connectors. One advantage of being at Quartzsite is the "Swap Shop" type stores have just about anything, and usually enough of what ever it is you are looking for that you can stock up. You usually only find a few large crimp lugs at most auto parts or big box stores; here there are bins full of them & a good prices. You do have to watch the quality - much of the stuff is rejects, or in the case of food & vitamins, outdated, but careful shopping can be rewarding.
After that is was back to the trailer & a bit of reading. I also updated my blog list.
Dinner was left over chili & a Alaskan Amber beer.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 22, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
Today is the start of my third week of dry camping here at the La Posa LTVA. I'm getting used to not having 120V AC, and only need to dump the waste tanks & fill the fresh water tank every 2 weeks. I'll change that because I'm heading to Sedona this weekend & I'll dump on Thursday rather than travel Friday with half filled tanks.
I spent the day sitting outside in my chair reading. I took a break in the afternoon to buy the fixings for chili. I couldn't find the exact stuff I use at hone (including home grown & canned tomatoes) so it was a bit of an experiment. Reducing my recipe I use at home for a large pot that makes two meals for two plus 7-8 batches to freeze is a little tricky. Quite a bit hotter than my usual, but it was chili, I'm in the southwest, not upstate NY, so that's OK. Even though I tried to make a small batch, I have enough to eat it again tomorrow, and freeze a batch for sometime in the future.

Monday, December 7, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 21, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
Another day with little to do. I did laundry this morning, and had a shower the laundromat. It was nice to be able to turn around in the shower, and run the water as long as I wanted. After that I picked up a few things at the grocery store, checked out the junk yard next to the grocery store (it is amazing what people here in Quartzsite are trying to sell). After that it was back to the trailer & time to sit outside. The weather was nice during the afternoon, although, as usual, it cooled off quickly after the sun went behind the mountains.
Dinner was a turkey Bubba Burger, snap peas & carrots.
Vincent, Glenda (the Casita owner's), & I sat around Vincent's campfire until around 7:30, after which it got cold enough to drive us home to the trailers.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 20
Tonight's Sunset |
I took my camera on the way to the dumpsters to photograph a beautifully restored 1950 Flexible bus conversion that arrived last night. I talked a bit with the owner; he said it was a 5 year project.
1950 Flexible Restoration
Other than that, not too much happening today. I walked to the gas station for coffee this morning. Don't know if it is a Sunday special or what, but only $.50 instead of $.65 to fill my insulated mug today. I decided to make pancakes & bacon for breakfast. Very filling, I didn't do anything but snack for lunch. The rest of the day was spent reading the Sunday Syracuse paper, catching up on some of the blogs I regularly read, and some forums. I updated my campground & fuel cost spreadsheet; Including the $180.00 purchase of the LTVA pass, I'm down to an average of $15.53 per night for camping costs.
I spent the late afternoon cooking a mildly unsuccessful chicken breast in wine sauce over rice dish. Editable, but nothing special. I did discover that my as yet untested Instant Clear Jel is powerful stuff. Where a tablespoon of flour would be necessary to thicken the sauce, one of Instant Clear Jel was way too much! My sauce turned to a paste. Still tasted OK. While doing the dishes, I stopped for a minute to shoot the sunset.

Saturday, December 5, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 19, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
I walked to the closest gas station on main street, about .8 miles, for coffee this morning. By the time I got back to the trailer it was cool enough to drink. Bring your own mug & it is only $.65 for a 20 oz fill up! I read the Syracuse Post Standard on my iPad, read some fiberglass trailer blogs, and, after lunch, sat outside. A quiet day spent reading, chatting with my neighbor, and doing nothing. It warmed up nicely; last night was another cool one with clear skies. This afternoon there is a bit of haze.
I'm keeping my promise made earlier that once I settled into the LTVA camping area, this journal would get pretty boring.
Dinner was the rest of the left over stew - always better the second day!

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 18
My First Attempt at Making Necklaces |
The cloud cover kept it reasonably warm overnight, just down to the upper 40's. Because I didn't run the furnace as long as usual, it only took until around 11:00AM to recharge the batteries, even with hazy sun. Now, at 1:45, it is completely cloud covered with no visible sun, but I'm still getting 3 amps from the solar panels.
I went into town to buy wrapping paper, gift boxes, a US Post Office mailing box, and clear nail polish. Managed to find it all between the Dollar Store & Quiet Times. The nail polish is to seal the knots in the necklaces I made for the granddaughters. An interesting project. I can see how one can become addicted to making jewelry; it is fun, and while a bit repetitive, something you can do while listening to the radio. Anyway, today's photo is my first attempt.
It will be interesting to see if the girls can keep from breaking them. I used a stretchy cord to string them, but that makes tying the knots at the clasps difficult. There is probably an "official" way to do it, but a couple of half hitches & a blob of nail polish is my solution.
Even though it is completely overcast, it is warm enough to sit outside so that is where I'm headed.
Dinner was a quick trip to Sweet Darlene's for their all you can eat Friday Fish Fry. Very good beer batter Cod, excellent coleslaw & fries, all for $9.95. Hard to beat!

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 17
Sunset Over the Fiberglass Trailers |
I decided it was time for a real dinner, so I went to the General Store, one of the two grocery stores in Quartzsite, and one that has a real butcher. Picked up a 1/2 pound of stew beef & started a stew for dinner. I didn't have all of my usual ingredients or spices, so it will probably be a bit different than a home made stew, but hey, I'm in Quartzsite! There is also another photo of an Unusual RV at today's LakeshoreImages page.
It is finally warming up during the day - it hit 69°F this afternoon, and is still 65°F at 4:30. I sat out & read while making the stew.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 16
Wednesday, December 2, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 16, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
I ran out of one tank of propane this morning. With the cooler temperatures, even with the furnace set at 60°F, it runs enough that the 20 lb tank that lasts most of a month just feeding the refrigerator only lasts a week feeding both.
Glenda pulled in this morning & set up her Casita next door. We are a little compound of little trailers - Vincent in his Casita, Glenda in her Casita & me in my Escape. There is a guy in a Scamp much further west of us; the fiberglass eggs are taking over!
I went to Gem World for a few more things. I now have the materials for making a couple of necklaces for my grandkids, however it looks to be an interesting "new hobby". My fingers are not as dexterous as they used to be; neither is my close vision, but it should be fun.
I repaired a bad solar extension cable, and made up a set of battery clips so I can use the panel in the way it was intended - using its solar controller rather than directly connection the panel output to my in trailer controller. After I topped off my batteries, I lent the panel to Glenda while her panels are being repaired.
Other than paying some bills, that was about it for the day. Dinner was spaghetti & meatballs.

La Posa West LTVA, Quartzite, AZ, Day 15
Tuesday, December 1, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzite, AZ, Day 15, 0 Miles, 3,585.9 Miles for the Trip
Today was dump day. For those that don't have an RV toilet, they drain into a tank that eventually gets full. If you are in a site with full hookups, you just go outside & pull the dump handle & the tank drains. Here in the LTVAs, there is a dump station located in La Posa South, about a 2 mile drive from my site. So, I hooked up the trailer for the first time in two weeks & headed out. Everything went OK, and when I came back to the camping area I set up the trailer a couple of hundred feet west of my previous location. A bit more open & a little further from the barking dogs.
I went to Blythe to have an eye exam, and unfortunately, my pressure is still too high. I have new drops & will go back in two weeks to see if they helped. He also checked my eyesight, and new glasses will provide a small amount of improvement. I'll have to think about it since I don't have glasses coverage with my insurance.
That was pretty much my day. Dinner was a Turkey Bubba Burger & snap peas.
