Site 47, South Campground, Zion National Park |
Friday, June 15 - Zion National Park, UT - 214.3 Miles Today, 6482.4 For the Trip
Actually, today's drive from the Kaibab Campground to Zion was only around 70 miles, but after setting up in site 47 in the South Campground, I decided to spend the afternoon at Cedar Breaks National Monument. Only problem - the road to the monument is closed about 15 miles from the entrance. I probably should have asked at the Zion Visitor Center about Cedar Breaks & saved a 150 mile round trip, but I assumed that with the limited amount of snow this winter it would be open. Snow wasn't the problem - last October a landslide took out a 1/2 mile section of UT 14. While a sign notes that it is open from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM and weekends, I arrived at 4:00 PM on a Friday. Oh well, I have tried to see the place 3 times so far- maybe I'll have some luck next time.
The site is nice - I have my very own stream (well, I share it with the other campsites in the area) running across the entrance to the site & The Watchman hanging out in the background. As expected, it is Hot. Expected high for tomorrow - 102°F!
I hope to hike the Narrows here in Zion tomorrow morning. I'm renting shoes & a dry bag for my camera. Not sure how far I'll get & still haven't decided whether to take my tripod. Since I want some "silky" water shots, I probably will.
Dinner will be simple tonight - it is 96°F in the trailer at 5:00 and just starting to cool down for the day.
Till tomorrow...
Zion! Oh, what a place! The heat, though, means I would be in a motel. Get some great shots, and post them! I will be watching.
